This source shows plans of various trenches used in the Aisne Valley, which was the site of one of the first battles in 1914. Look at it carefully to see what it tells you about trench warfare. An enlarged version is available.

1. Why were there so many types of trench in use in the Aisne Valley?

2. Which trench looks (a) most safe and (b) least safe? Explain your answer.

3. The Aisne Valley witnessed fighting in September 1914. What does this tell you about the trenches in use? How might this be different as the war progressed?
