The attack on Gavrelle trench – Source 1

Official warning order for the attack on Gavrelle Trench. (DUL ref: Lowe Papers, File B2)

In spring 1917 the allies embarked on a major offensive against the Germans in the area around Arras. The area was strategically important as it was very hilly which gave the Germans the advantage of being able to see over a great distance. 18 DLI were tasked with the capture of Gavrelle Trench. The next four sources all relate to the role of 18 DLI in that action. Each source is accompanied by questions to help you interpret the material but your main task is to think about the following big questions:

  • Was it easier to attack or defend a trench?
  • How could trenches be overcome?
  • What was trench warfare like?
  • Why did it lead to stalemate?

This source is the Warning Order for the attack on Gavrelle Trench which provides detailed information about the action. Read it carefully and answer the questions below. Remember to think about the big questions. A transcript and enlarged version are available.

1. What is the intention of this attack?

2. Why does the author think that the enemy is nervous? What might this mean for the Allies?

3. Who will be leading the assault?

4. What support will there be?

5. Does this sound like an easy attack? Explain your answer.
