| powder monkey | a boy whose job it was to take gunpowder to the cannons aboard a ship during a battle |

| profitability | being able to make money or other gain |
| Quaker | a member of the Society of Friends, a religious group |

| steward | a person in charge of the dining arrangements onboard ship |
